Working at Home

Working at home isn’t for everyone. When you think about working at home, you think “Hey, it’s like not having a boss!” In reality, you do have a boss, but that boss is you.

Some of us need the rigorous schedule of a nine to five, others are better at working on their own time. It depends on you, your own limits, how well you know yourself. If you have never worked at home but would like to give it a try, here are some tips for staying on task.

Keep Semi-Regular Hours
The cool thing about working at home is that these hours can be whenever you want, but they should be roughly the same every day. You could go ahead and wake up at noon, watch TV til four, take a shower and then finally get to work anywhere from five to six, but as long as you stay within that time frame, you should be fine. If you work in the morning one day, the evening the next, it can be tougher and tougher to get into a good rhythm for working at home.

Set Goals
Some of us work from home on a specific hour schedule, as in we work from noon til eight, or eight til two or whatever. Other ways of setting goals might be, say, a webmaster who is determined to write ten pages before calling it a day. However you set your goals, don’t give yourself any leeway. If you’re gonna work til eight, don’t call it quits at five. If you’re gonna write ten pages, write ten, not three. That said, there is wiggle room for emergencies, for when you’re just not feeling it, but try to force yourself to meet your goals as much as possible.

Eat Well and Exercise
Working at home, you can forget to take care of yourself, so do yourself a favor: halfway through every work day, three or four hours in, take a break, eat lunch, go outside and take a fifteen minute walk. Sitting on your butt all day can cause heart disease, so take care of yourself, because what’s the good of being your own boss if it means an early grave?
